TORONTO BOTANICAL GARDEN TO HOST ASTER AWARDS
Inaugural Event Honours Inspiring Canadian “Green Stars”
Toronto, ON October 31, 2013 — Toronto Botanical Garden is pleased to host the inaugural Aster Awards on Thursday, November 21. This event celebrates three extraordinary individuals whose work has inspired us to connect with nature and to appreciate its beauty, dynamism and fragile vulnerability. Edward Burtynsky’s images of scarred landscapes, Janet Rosenberg’s elegant and refined garden spaces, and Scott MacIvor’s research into the life and struggles of bees draw us into the natural world and invite us to re-discover, celebrate, and protect it.
Renowned Canadian artist Charles Pachter and visionary retailer Sandy Stagg are the honorary chairs of this year’s evening awards reception, which will be entertainingly emceed by celebrity chef and seasoned TV host Christine Cushing.

Janet Rosenberg
With almost 30 years of experience and an extensive portfolio of high-profile urban and suburban projects, Janet is a recognized figure in landscape architecture and urban design across Canada. Known for her work on both public landmarks and private landscapes, Janet often pushes the boundaries of design to the benefit of those who use and enjoy the spaces she creates.

Edward Burtynsky
Edward Burtynsky is known as one of Canada’s most respected photographers. His remarkable photographic depictions of global industrial landscapes are included in the collections of over fifty major museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California.

Scott MacIvor
Scott MacIvor is an ecologist with research interests in biodiversity and ecological trade offs in urban areas and in architectural and landscape design. In his PhD at York University, Scott is studying the community ecology of bees and wasps in cities. He is also research coordinator at the University of Toronto Green Roof Innovation Technology (GRIT) lab where he evaluates the contribution of plant traits and species diversity, and other biotic variables, to green roof performance. His work has received several awards, including a Canadian Governor General’s Gold Medal.
Tickets for the 2013 Aster Awards are $125 each. Proceeds support TBG’s efforts to connect people to the benefits provided by nature.
